Located about 25 kilometers west of Rome along the Tiber River near the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ostia Antica was a port city and the first harbor of Rome. Ostia Antica is comparable to Pompei as it portrays a virtual experience of Ancient Roman city life. You will trek the same ancient streets that were once occupied by sailors and merchants from all walks of the Roman Empire. Your guide will bring to life the history of the crowded taverns, baths, theatres, brothels and apartment buildings that remain intact today. This itinerary consists of Necroplois, Porta Romana, Republican Warehouses, Baths of Neptune, Teatro, Square of the Guilds, Mill, Via Casa di Diana, The Forum, The Marine Gate and you’ll finish up with a visit to the Ostia Museum. Ostia Antica is conveniently located near Rome and offers a less crowded, more serene atmosphere than the Eternal City. Much like Pompei, the ruins of the Ostia Antica are spread over a large area, but unlike Pompei, Ostia Antica offers the amenities of modern life including a museum, a cafeteria and close proximity to beaches and Rome. All the while, you will take in the beautiful and peaceful Roman countryside.
