"In Rome you long for the country; in the country oh inconstant! you praise the distant city to the stars" − Horace, Ancient Roman Poet (65 BC-8 BC)
This Rome Shore Excursion for cruise passengers makes meeting the ancient city a cinch! A Presto Guide meets you at your cruise ship terminal at the Civitavecchia Port at 8:15 AM, accompanies you throughout the whole day visiting inside the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. Your guide then accompanies you back to your cruise ship terminal for 5:30 PM with plenty of time to spare before your ship's departure. The cost is 359 Euro/person and includes: Presto Guide accompaniment for the whole day, guided tour of the Vatican City, guided tour of the Colosseum, prebooked Vatican and Colosseum entrance tickets, and roundtrip train tickets from Civitavecchia to Rome.
Your Presto Guide will meet you near the port exit in Civitavecchia and accompany you into Rome on the local commuter train (which is our favorite mode of transportation into the city as we avoid all of the morning traffic!). The trip into Rome takes about 1 hour. During this time your guide will prepare you for your visit and even have the unique opportunity to point out some landmarks in the Roman countryside which you will pass on route. You will be in Rome from approximately 10 AM to 4 PM. Once you arrive in Rome, we will bring to you see one of the new seven wonders of the world, and Rome's famous host to gladiatorial contests and public spectacles--the Roman Colosseum. Your guide will give you a breakdown of the significance of this stadium during the Roman Empire's glory years and the implications it still carries for Romans today.
After visiting ancient Roman history at the Colosseum and recharging with a brief lunch stop, we will trot over to the Vatican City and explore the Catholic epicenter of the world. Inside the Vatican Museums you'll be surrounded by both ancient masterpieces such as the Belvedere Apollo, a Roman second century copy from a Greek bronze original possibly by Leochares (330-320 B.C.) and Renaissance masterpieces, such as the Mass of Bolsena by Raphael. Before silently revelling your senses inside the Sistine Chapel (there is no talking allowed inside this holy sight), your Presto guide will recap the Biblical Story of Creation, the Downfall of Humanity and the Story of Noah which Michelangelo depicted in his world renowned frescos. Whilst exploring the making of the Sistine Chapel, we will take a peek into the politics of the Vatican City's art commissions and get to know the artists' with the help of your guide's favorite anecodotes.
Finally we will visit St. Peter's Basilica, named after St. Peter, the first Pope and the modern day patron saint of Rome. Architect Donato Bramante designed the Basilica with a precise symbolism which according to Arnaldo Bruschi can be "schematised – in accord with an ancient, mostly Byzantine tradition – as a cube (the world) with four extending arms (the four parts of the world), and a dome above it (heaven)." Inside the Basilica we will find another of Michelangelo's masterpieces, his sculpture, the Pieta' and more.
After the Vatican Tour, your guide will accompany you to the train station and have you back at your cruise ship for 5:30 PM.
Rest assured, we know that you'll want to treat your taste buds to some Roman delights along the way! We will have a short lunch break where you can grab a panini, slice of pizza, or salad for under 10 Euro. You can even grab a gelato if you'd like to go straight to dessert!
