Rome Shore Excursion

This Rome Shore Excursion for cruise passengers makes meeting the ancient city a cinch! We meet you right at Civitavecchia Port and accompany you throughout the day to visit the highlights of Rome. We visit the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica and perhaps a stop at the Pantheon if you have time!

We then accompany you back to Civitavecchia Port to ensure that you arrive back to Civitavecchia Port by 5:30 PM with plenty of time to spare before your ship’s departure. This tour features a Presto Guide for the day, guided tour of the Vatican City, guided tour of the Colosseum, prebooked Vatican and Colosseum entrance tickets, a peek at the center of Rome with the option of hiring a private driver for the day to pick you up at and return you to Civitavecchia Port.

Once you arrive in Rome, we make our first stop at one of the seven wonders of the world, and Rome’s famous host to gladiatorial contests and public spectacles–the Roman Colosseum!  Here you’ll meet your Presto Guide  for the day where you’ll learn all about this Flavian Amphitheater.  You’ll get a breakdown of the significance of this stadium during the Roman Empire’s glory years and the implications it still carries for Romans today.

After visiting Ancient Rome at the Colosseum, we recharge with a brief lunch stop,and trot over to the Vatican City to explore the Catholic epicenter of the world. Inside the Vatican Museums we visit ancient masterpieces such as the Belvedere Apollo and Renaissance masterpieces such as the Mass of Bolsena by Raphael. Before silently reveling your senses inside the Sistine Chapel (there is no talking allowed inside this holy site), we will recap the Biblical Story of Creation, the Downfall of Humanity and the Story of Noah which Michelangelo depicted in his world renowned frescos. Whilst exploring the making of the Sistine Chapel, we will take a peek into the politics of the Vatican City’s art commissions and get to know the artists through various anecdotes.

Finally we will visit St. Peter’s Basilica, named after St. Peter, the first Pope and the modern day patron saint of Rome. Colosseum Tour Architect Donato Bramante designed the Basilica with a precise symbolism which according to Arnaldo Bruschi can be “schematised – in accord with an ancient, mostly Byzantine tradition – as a cube (the world) with four extending arms (the four parts of the world), and a dome above it (heaven).” Inside the Basilica we will find another of Michelangelo’s masterpieces, his sculpture, the Pieta’ and more.

Once we complete the Vatican visit,  you’ll be on your way back to port.  Your professional driver will have you back at your cruise ship at Civitavecchia Port with plenty of time to spare!
