This Vatican Tour Intensive is for the serious visitor to the Vatican City. We will visit the Vatican Gardens, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's Dome, and St. Peter's Square. On this Vatican Tour we will lead you through the maze of the Vatican City and look closely at the Vatican Museums' marvelous art collection as well as the more hidden, rarely seen, Vatican Gardens. Little is it known that in the Pope's backyard lay luscious green gardens with extraordinary outdoor architecture and garden sculptures. This intensive, eight-hour day will be split up with a short lunch break to refresh our legs and minds at the Vatican Museums cafe.
We recommend this tour for those not faint of heart, but for those who are intent on capturing the maximum experience possible in a one day visit to the Vatican City. Inside the museums, we will visit: the Raphael Rooms, the Pinoteca Gallery, the Sistine Chapel, and the Octagonal Courtyard. Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini and others will be recurring artists we will visit.
Before silently revelling your senses inside the Sistine Chapel (there is no talking allowed inside this holy site), your Presto guide will recap the Biblical Story of Creation, the Downfall of Humanity, and the Story of Noah, which Michelangelo depicted in his world-renowned frescos. Whilst exploring the making of the Sistine Chapel, we will take a peek into the politics of the Vatican City's art commissions and get to know the artists' with the help of your guide's favorite anecodotes.
Finally, we will visit St. Peter's Basilica, named after St. Peter, the first Pope and the modern day patron saint of Rome. Architect Donato Bramante designed the Basilica with a precise symbolism which according to Arnaldo Bruschi can be "schematised – in accord with an ancient, mostly Byzantine tradition – as a cube (the world) with four extending arms (the four parts of the world), and a dome above it (heaven)." Inside the Basilica we will find another of Michelangelo's masterpieces, his sculpture, the Pieta', and more. After the Basilica segment of the tour, you will have plenty of time to remain inside the Basilica on your own and even attend Mass or confession if you so desire.
Presto Guides leading this Vatican Tour intensive are art history PHDs, art curators, or art historians. The Vatican Gardens segment of the tour is led by an official Vatican City Guide.
As an officially approved agency with the Vatican Museums, Presto Tours and our guests are privy to the Vatican Museums special VIP entrance and will gain instant entry to sites.
